Twynd is Harry Matthews' second poetry collection. In it we are taken, in the symmetric & thematic sense, around two things twinning around each other, be they the sun and its reflection in a lake or two souls pairing & resonating together. In the asymmetric sense of theme, Twynd is about one thing twinned around another rather than mutually- be it in environmental despoilment by Man, or in the ugly smothering the beautiful. Twynd, we discover, is also the abbreviated form of Chetwynd, a small hill in Shropshire, where several poems are set, while others explore faith, God, nature & classical antiquity.
A work full of spirit, vision & ideas about life. His poetry is sensitive & glowing with light, radiating in darkness...
These beautiful poems are submerged in the mystery of life. Themes of soul, history, nature & spirit captured in finely shaped poems, in which the beauty of landscape is called into form, revealing a fuller faith in the incarnation of the Logos as Redeemer.
He evokes the magic of the earth in a spiritual vision. In a cold world where love often feels like disappearing, these poems are gems from the darkness, bringing a lightness that heralds the discovery of a new sanctuary at the foot of Parnassus.
