Harry Matthews' first collection, Sonarification, charms the sea to give a sound. His poems arise from a depth and profundity blended with enchantment. It is a ground breaking book of poems. Its themes are familiar but are given a contemporary significance in the threats to the ocean, and more traditionally, in poems celebrating antiquity, love, friendship, loss and triumph. The poems move in an ever-expanding wave that continues to echo; for he believes poetry should signify extraordinary and important realities. Sonarification is a visionary work, a sonar reading for the soul in a suffering world.
Sonarification invites the reader to decipher a world of associations evoking pictures in the mind. His poetry celebrates the sacred and profane, in a revitalised and stylised language that captures a unique spirit, full of longing and intensity that appeals to the mystic sensibility.
A poetry of nuances, entering many levels...He is an innovator...He comes close to the poet's actual task of gaining new power in expressing a fresh perspective on the world. He gives sound, word & myth a fulfilling, embodied soul expression, & a style that finds itself in the centre of a sphere of rhythm & tone.
Harry Matthews was born in Staffordshire and educated in Shropshire before attending University. He worked as a journalist abroad, before he started to write poetry. He exhibits his paintings annually & holds a Master of Arts degree in Writing.
